A System Overview

Your car’s air conditioner operates by utilizing high- and low-pressure sides to change the physical state of the refrigerant as it cycles through the system. Driven by the engine, the compressor increases the pressure of the refrigerant by compressing it. As the refrigerant circulates, it absorbs heat. The condenser cools the refrigerant. It’s located in front of the radiator and lets the refrigerant return to its liquid state. The evaporator’s job is to remove heat from the air in the passenger cabin. The orifice tube and expansion valve control refrigerant flow. The accumulator/receiver/drier removes moisture from the air, making it more comfortable and less damaging to the A/C system. The blower motor circulates the cooled air, allowing it to enter the passenger area.

When to See Us

It’s a good idea to see the team at Traditions Auto Service periodically for car A/C repair. This allows us to inspect your system and head off any developing problems. A good rule of thumb is to let us check your air conditioner about once each year. There are, however, some signs you may notice that should prompt you to schedule a visit. The most common indicator and repair is air that isn’t cool enough. This is almost always a manifestation of a low refrigerant level. While it’s normal to need a recharge periodically across the lifespan of your automobile, you shouldn’t need one often. If you do, we’ll need to find the leak that’s allowing refrigerant to escape. If the air coming through the vents isn’t cool at all, your system may have a bad compressor. If you’re in tune with the typical sounds and feels of your vehicle, you’ll probably notice the absence of the compressor cycling on and off. If the unit fails to power on, the culprit may be an electrical problem, such as a broken wire. Should you notice a wet carpet or puddled water under the dash, there is likely a clog that’s causing an overflow. Be aware of bad smells, too. If you notice a damp, musty odor each time you turn on the air conditioner, there may be mold in the ducts. This situation should be addressed immediately to protect the air quality you’re breathing. Whether your transportation is due for a check or has a noticeable issue, Traditions Auto Service is the name you can trust for car A/C repair.
